Volunteer Plants

Living in my sheet compost! I had spotted plenty of greenlings all summer, and plucked out most. Then grew lax for a few weeks and look what happened! I swear it grew from a weakling shoot to this overnight. It is fairly contained here in the image taken a week ago:

Yes, you see tomatoes too. They’ve blossomed well but I only spotted a few small fruits. There’s still time and the tomato is still blooming. That’s tarragon you see in the herb pot. The basil is kind of hidden under giant leaves.

The Plant now engulfs everything around it. I moved the herb pot yesterday, it didn’t even show under those huge leaves. The basil growing in that pot has great long skinny stems and leaves only at the very top. Poor little basil. Here, look at the blossoms and the beautiful network of plumbing or whatever you want to call it running along the garden’s mulch.

Volunteer Plant Fruit

Today I found a nicely shaped fruit on it. I still have no idea what it is-squash or melon, perhaps someone who intentionally grows either can tell me. I don’t care which it is, I’ll eat whatever I get! Who knew growing food could be so effortless?
