A Friendly Feral and her Kittens

27 September, 2009 at 10:18 am (Cats, Fiber Follies) (, , , , , , , , )

Meet Westie.  She was born at the end of January 2009.  Unfortunately she disappeared to get pregnant in early June when I trapped some of her friends and relatives.  Dang!

Westie has known us since she was about 6 weeks old.  She was a rambunctious little fluffball but soon decided that us humans were pretty neat. See how she enjoys a good petting and scritching? She’s a very nice cat!

Below are her children. The little blue fella is quite sociable like his mum. When I approach he rolls over and over, purring like crazy and loving every little scritch and pat. He didn’t much like the flea comb and nail trim, though. Just wait until his bath! He’s active and apparently quite happy. I’m calling him Sterling for now, at least until I think of something better or decide that Sterling is a perfectly good name for him.

The black kitten is Obsidian. I call him Sid since that sounds both more catly and more manly. Sid is a shy little guy who isn’t yet accustomed nor comfortable with handling. I think I should swaddle him for a long session, it worked for the brown tabbie when he first came here.

I brought in the kittens a few days ago to protect them against the mystery cat disappearances. Then learned that their mum, the lovely Westie, might decide to come in and hang out near the babies.

And she does. A few brief visits during the day. And the past two nights she has slept in the garage, on one of the soft warm pads I made for her. She’s right by the little ones and all seem quite happy. She purrs like crazy while comfortably keeping watch by the kittens.  It only took a few sessions to be able to shut the outside doors without her getting nervous.

I wonder if Westie might become tame enough to become a mostly indoors girl? Unfortunately I cannot keep her, but she can camp out in our garage whenever she wishes. I might be able to avoid ear-tipping when she’s spayed if she keeps her friendly approach. It’s exciting to win over a not-quite-adult feral queen. Babies are easy.

Little Brown Tabby Needs a HOME

26 September, 2009 at 1:48 pm (Cats)

Bungie

He has been named for the sake of adoption. His new name is Brigadier Bungie. We call him Brigs, Bungie, Bunj, or Get Off That.

Bunj is now neutered, is fully up to date on all vax, and needs a home! He’s a wonderful little cat. Very energetic, playful, and loving in turns.

He’s a shorthair brown spotted mackerel tabby. His markings are gorgeous. His very short coat is smooth and healthy.

Interested? I hope so! Leave a comment to this post if you’d like more information.

Dart, Lollypop Farm’s Cat of the Week

24 September, 2009 at 11:28 pm (Cats, Lollypop) (, , , , , , )

DART

#1057362 Dart

Dart is an 8-year-old male cat who was adopted from Lollypop Farm several years ago and then recently returned when his family moved and did not take him with them. Dart is a great cat! He has lived with both cats and children and got along well with everyone. Dart is eligible for our Seniors-for-Seniors program, so adopters age 60 and older can take him home free of charge! Come out and meet Dart today!

***************************************************************

The little brown tabbie is in for neuter.  Yes, neuter.  The “girl” cat grew a set overnight.  I miss him, he’s such good company.  I don’t know why no one will step forward to give him a home, he’s great fun.  I’ll keep trying.

Full of Win

23 September, 2009 at 12:05 pm (Fiber Follies, Spinning) (, , , , , , , )

Paint and Stain, finished!

My Query to ASWUG, the Ashford Spinners Group on Ravelry:

I have an Ashford Traditional, bought 2 yrs ago. I painted and stained it so it’s a rather handsome thing. It’s simple colours without fancy nonsense, definitely not twee. Altogether a nice looking wheel with room for gilding or whatever if a new owner wanted more decoration. Here’s the finished wheel:

ANYWAY! Our local fiber festival is this weekend. I’ve been trying to sell this wheel for more than a year but no one wants a not-much-used wheel if it costs over 50$. I am also expected to pay for shipping. Not happening.

So, since everyone wants a bargain, would people be willing to take a chance on a wheel? I think I’d sell tickets for 5$ each or 5 for $20. That’s about the limit I feel people would spend on a raffle. The drawing would necessarily be before the festival ends so someone could go home with a custom-painted wheel (and EVERYTHING that came with it when new) for as little as five dollars.

I expect I’d get little out of it, probably a total of 200$, but that’s a LOT more than anyone was willing to pay for an almost new wheel. I can consider the shortfall ‘rent’ for the time that I had this wheel.

…would people be willing to participate in a used-wheel raffle? …It’s clean, it’s got everything that shipped with it new, it works perfectly, there are even some extra bobbins and I’m adding about 100g of roving just for fun. For all that, it IS a used wheel. Am I stupid to think this might sell the wheel?

And later added:

I have dug up the owner manual, including the inspection card and free issue of some publication that came with it, a hex key for tightening something, a few other papers-probably the put-together instructions, they’re all in the original folder. I have also got the lazy kate that came with it (I stained it to match the wheel), the original oil bottle with long needle nozzle, and three of the bobbins that came with it. I know there are more bobbins but can’t seem to find them this minute! Ach! I am also including the primer, paint and stain that I used on it. They may not be very usable now but at least the new owner can match the colours that I used, and touch it up as needed.

I decided to include some really pretty alpaca top in soft greens. I hope people like it.

I did advertise it here a year ago but only three people showed any interest, they all wanted it for around 100$ (I wasn’t going to sell it for nothing) and they wanted free shipping. Not one was local-and I’d offered to personally deliver it within reasonable distance of 50 or so miles of home. I wasn’t going to ship it out of state and swallow the cost. Of course this was a year ago and no one was really fit to buy much then!

So, if all I’ll get is 100$, I may as well have fun selling it.

Among the many responses, this from ‘JudyBlazer’:

I will be there and buying a few tickets, will you be drawing before the close of the festival (should we wait to head home)? My name is Judy and I am coming from Erie PA and I am looking forward to meeting you and seeing your wheel.….

************************************************************

I thoroughly enjoyed sitting and spinning throughout both days of the festival.  I hadn’t yet recovered from ‘flu and complications so sitting in the sun peacefully spinning was a treat.  Many people stopped to chat, several identified themselves as Ravellers and a fair number purchased tickets.  I loved meeting people from Ravelry!  One lady spent considerable time with me-she was the sort with whom people get on immediately.  We chatted about spinning and cats and whatever else seemed chattable.  She had come with two friends and spent time with me while they explored the festival.  These were the trio consisting of annemargaret,  judyblazer and knittinkitten22 (their Ravelry ids).  What a fun group they were.  annemargaret was the only non-spinner (or, as I put it, ‘not-yet-spinner’) in the group, but had been convinced by her companions to try a drop spindle.  It was pleasant to have a friendly person there whose company was such a treat.  After a time, she left, but not before purchasing a handful of tickets.    That entire group bought tickets, I think.

************************************************************

I responded:

I plan to draw about ten minutes before the festival ends. If you’re there with your mobile phone I recommend using that for a contact # when you fill your ticket. Erie, PA is a bit of a trip!

And after the festival ended, we’d drawn the winner, and a few interesting circumstances thrown in:

We have a winner! And what a screwed up bollocks I almost made, too!

Nearly every Raveller who stopped by bought at least one ticket. Thank you, everyone! I love Ravellers and thank you all for visiting while I spun.

Anyway, the mistake. I read the name on the ticket, and, seeing that it didn’t appear that the winner was on the grounds, I rang her tel# to leave a message about delivery arrangements.

One awesome sweet, funny lady and her two accomplices, er, I mean, friends, insisted on carrying the wheel, folding chair, bag, etc to the van. We all hugged & parted. I worked to fasten the wheel securely into place then thought to check the ticket again.

Yes. I’d mis-read the name and the winner just happened to be the very same lady who had carried the wheel across the grounds and back to the van! And it just so happened that these ladies were parked only a few meters from my van so I could holler over the news!

Oh-AnneMargaret of Erie, PA is the very happy winner and definitely a friend for life. It was AWESOME. Your surprise and sheer joy over having won made my day.

And, finally, a word from the winner:

Well, here I am. WOW!! I WON!! I couldn’t believe it. I am a rank beginning spinner but decided to spend the money and take a chance. Since I came with judyblazer and knittinkitten22, I had some wonderful mentors to guide me. It’s as she said. I carried the wheel, thinking it was going to someone else. I had made a friend, so life was good. I am friends with a lady who sells Ashfords in Brocton and knew that she would not steer me wrong when I could afford to purchase one. I purchased a drop spindle and some fiber and vowed to be content with that. When Fiber Follies came over to our car as we were saying good-bye to our traveling companions, I was just overwhelmed and speechless. I am in love! I love the color and green is my favorite. I love the style, as I love the traditional old-fashioned look. I love Fiber Follies for doing the raffle. We had become instant friends when I stopped to purchase my tickets. Life is wonderful.

I am going to read the information and try to get it set back up. I hugged it all the way home in the back seat of Judy’s car! My husband was amazed and thought I had spent big bucks which, frankly, we didn’t have. He is into antiques also and our house is old, so my new love will fit right in! Now I just have to learn to use it! I am primarialy a sew-er, but do hand embroidery, tatting and other stuff also. I am happy to be in this group and I look forward to getting some help from both my local spinning friends and those on this service. This is my first post, but it won’t be my last. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Fiber Follies. I have a beautiful wheel to spin with and I have made a forever friend! Live is more than wonderful!

And, just for fun, I took a picture of everyone taking pix of Anne and me posing with the wheel in the carpark Of course, dingbat that I can be, I never thought to get images of winner & wheel!:

Lollypop Farm offers a Princess

17 September, 2009 at 1:47 pm (Cats)

PRINCESS

#7873315 Princess

Princess is a very sweet 4-year-old female cat. She came in with 6 babies and went into foster care to raise them, and she was a very attentive mother — playing with them, grooming them, and watching over them. She loves attention and loves to play — particularly with a laser light. She is litter trained and will use a sisal or cardboard scratching post. She is a bit timid at first but once she gets to know you, she will curl up on your lap. Princess is good with other cats and dogs. Princess would make a wonderful companion, please consider paying her a visit!

Risky Remembered

11 September, 2009 at 4:01 pm (Cats, Yatterbabble) (, , , , , , )

Inquisitive MissYesterday was the second anniversary of Risky’s unfortunate passing.  I kept quite busy but throughout the day remembered what I was doing at that time two years ago.

There is no other like Risky. Five too-short years was all that we had together. Grief no longer leaves me torn but the sorrow will probably always be in that place that she made in my heart.

PeekPeek-a-boo I am still bitter about the staff at the emergency hospital who lied to me about their mistakes. They will never again be let to treat one of my cats. I’d much rather have a cat die at home than to be killed in that strange cold noisy place where inexperienced staff are let to do as they wish. My baby was not a lab animal, but was treated like one. I can only pray that if another urgent illness happens among my felines, that there is a doctor on call at their regular hospital.

Poor little Risky!  Such a bruiser but insecure-she had to be reassured that she was loved.  She hated unfamiliar circumstances, preferring the routine of home.  A giant wimp when out to the vet, or when I’d try to harness her for walks in the yard.  To be left in that place, where I wasn’t let to be with her, must have torn her up.  I believe that that, too, contributed to her passing.  Poor little kitty-girl.

GEORGIE

#3316111 Georgie

Georgie is a 2-year-old male cat who was returned to Lollypop Farm because he wasn’t getting along with the other cats that lived with his family. Georgie would prefer to be the only pet in his new home. Georgie is very friendly and meows to say hello! He likes attention and loves being petted. Georgie has lots of love to give!

Poor Georgie! This happens too often.

PrestoChango!

6 September, 2009 at 12:01 am (Fiber Follies, Grannybabble, knitting) (, , , , , )

presto chango, baby, sweater, jumper, green, cotton, glass It’s finally finished. I had completed the knitting months ago but hate making up so put it off until I feared that Vesper would be too big to wear it. As usual, I had troubles getting everything just so. Especially the buttons. I placed them several times. removed them, re-placed them, took them off, re-re-placed them and gave up. They’re gonna be crooked and I am done. I could have been tidier about straightening the garment out before taking pictures, whoops. It’s not quite as drunken as it looks. The beautiful sparkly glass buttons were made by Bob at Winderwood Farm. He’s entirely awesome. You’ve seen mention of the farm before. If you’re in the upstate/western NY region, you can find him at the The Finger Lakes Fiber Arts Festival at the Hemlock Fair Ground on 19 and 20 September. Look for the huge enormous tent-that’s Winderwood Farm.
