Squeekie is a long, lean handsome cat with a real ‘cat-attitude’! This 2-year-old male cat is fun to
have around - he can be funny, devious and cute all in the space of 5 minutes! Squeekie enjoys
human company but under his own terms. Squeekie likes the company of dogs and other cats but
would definitely be best as an only cat. Squeekie would be best placed in a calm, adult only home
preferably with someone who has had cats before. He is available for adoption but is currently
living in one of the Admin Offices at Lollypop. If you would like to meet him, please ask to see him
in Cindy’s office.

You know that I am a softie for cats. Well. Thanks to my purported interest in fiber arts, I found a lady named Ida through (where else?) the Maine Coon cat forum on Ravelry. Her story is amazing, for Ida is a one-woman haven for cats in desperate need. Broken kitties, elderly kitties, those precious cats who are too often overlooked. I admire her.

In memory of a truly special cat friend, Ida has created the Lily M. Foundation. Please take a moment and visit. Also, as Ida stated in a recent post:

One of its programs is Lily’s Friends, which reaches out to animals of all kinds in need. I have been publishing a newsletter, but until now it was only available to members of the foundation board. I have decided to broaden the scope of the newsletter as well as open subscriptions to non-board members. I just received my first newsletter and it is well worth the read. Ida has a blog, too. I don’t know how she manages all these activities but what inspiration!

Dakota is a handsome buff and white 2-year-old male cat who has been through a lot this year. He was brought in as a stray, and adopted twice, and finally returned because the owners turned out to be allergic too him! Poor guy! Dakota enjoys having his ears rubbed and is very talkative. Do I Knit?

Well, yes. Except it’s not happening much nowadays. Also the main WIP now involves something I am not allowed to discuss so it will simply have to wait.

I do have a couple of WIPs that stalled. One is the Entrelac Purse from Oat Couture. It’s a great pattern and quite easy to follow. It’s my first entrelac knitting and I admit that it’s pretty unexciting to knit but boyo! It’s handsome once a few rows are done. The only problem is that I once had five skeins of Noro Silk Garden, which I thought would be excellent for an entrelac project. It took weeks to decide on this pattern. I cheerfully set to, then laid it aside when warm weather hit.

That was last year. This winter I figured it would be nice to finish up a few projects and that was the first selected.

Somehow my five skeins of Silk Garden became two. I have no recollection of where the rest has gone. I looked and looked and now believe that I gave some away.

That’s not bad, though, it’s the spirit of fiber crafting. However, I now have a front and a back for an entrelac purse and insufficient yarn to finish it off. It’s been set aside yet again until I decide whether to find a contrasting yarn or to fudge the pattern somewhat. sigh.

The other is a lace bit I started for the sake of using a skein of Kidsilk Haze. I cast on in December 07. I love knitting lace and hadn’t done one measly bit in 07 so had to start a piece before the year was out. I haven’t even made it through a repeat.

I have such nice plans and patterns all over the place but getting my act together isn’t as easy as I’d hoped.

Munchie is a 3-year-old female cat who was brought to Lollypop Farm because her owners could not afford her care any longer. She is a sweet lady who enjoys petting and attention. Munchie has lived with kids and done well with them, but she should be the only cat in the household. A Record Adoption Weekend!

Spearheaded by the “Change Their Luck” Cat Adopt-a-thon on Friday the 13th, we are thrilled to announce that a record 118 pets were adopted to new homes over a three day period! That’s new homes for 76 (yes 76!) cats and 31 dogs, 1 rabbit, 1 fowl, 1 domestic bird and 8 rodents. Thanks to all who opened your homes and hearts to these homeless animals!

This is Sammie. She’s one of the ferals who feed here. I’ve been feeding four ferals daily since October 2007. Sammie was tiny back then and rarely seen until late November. I guess her mum thought she was too little to come out and feed until then. She’s just about full size now. She’s also quite shy. Her curiosity brings her near my feet but she’s not brave enough to come any closer. See the picture below? That’s her mum, Marta, sitting in the cool garden on a very hot afternoon.

Phoebe and Daphne are the rest of my feral clan. Sorry about the pictures, I took them on the mobile on the night-time setting. They’re not really blue-they’re grey tabbies. Phoebe is cute, curious, and full of piss and vinegar. She approaches me, growling all the way, until a half meter away then mewls pitifully until I toss her a treat. Daphne is Phoebe’s mum and is terrified of humans. Daphne is a round faced cobby-bodied lady. She looks like a story-book cat, doesn’t she?

I’ve been pretty much confined indoors with bad allergies lately so The Husband has taken over feeding the ferals. He wasn’t as delighted with them as me but once he’d fed them once and got to see their personalities he was hooked. Phoebe is that close to taking food from his hand-she gets near enough then swats the treat out and catches it mid-air. I want to be jealous. After all, it took me months to get them comfortable enough to come when I brought out the food, then he helps for a week and just like that, they’re old friends. I can’t be jealous though-he’s having such fun with them.

We had a huge thunder storm the other day. Thunder shook the ground, right up from the basement into my feet. There was an exciting lightning show and even hail-lots of hail.

And then the rainbow. Rainbows, really, there were two full arcs and the bottom arc kept repeating its colours underneath.

Marathon Event Promotes Cat Adoptions and Offers Education on Cats and Their Care

FAIRPORT, NY - On Friday, June 13th, Lollypop Farm, the Humane Society of Greater Rochester, is hosting the “Change Their Luck” Cat Adopt-a-thon. Lollypop Farm will be open for a marathon 13 hours (9 a.m. - 10 p.m.), when cats can be adopted for just $13 (kittens under 5 months for $66). This special cat adoption event is part of Lollypop Farm’s Adopt-A-Cat Month celebration focused on finding new families for the hundreds of homeless cats and kittens brought to the shelter during the summer months.

“People who share their homes with cats know the joys that they bring to the family,” said Alice Calabrese Smith, President and CEO. “During this time when cats and litters of kittens begin crowding our shelter, it is critical that we offer as many opportunities as possible for these cats to find loving new homes, and for people to learn more about cats as part of the family.”

The Rochester community is also invited to visit the shelter during these extended hours to enjoy a variety of vendors and giveaways, educational displays on cats, and refreshments. Veterinarians from Lollypop Farm and more will be on hand to answer questions about the care and health of cats. Counselors from Lollypop Farm’s Pet Peeves Behavior Help Line will be available to help people solve their behavior issues. Visitors can also enter raffles for an assortment of cat-related prizes, and enjoy refreshments during their visit to the shelter.

On the 13th, for 13 hours, adult cats can be adopted for just $13 (kittens for $66). The reduced adoption fee includes the same year-round benefits, plus extra gifts for the new feline in the family:

* Spaying or neutering
* Feline leukemia testing
* Vaccinations and parasite treatment
* Certificate for a free health exam
* A 30-day gift of Pet Health Insurance
* Microchipping
* Advantage flea control treatment
* Free behavior and training advice
* Free raffle ticket for entry into several giveaways
* Starter kit that includes: a kitty collar and engraved ID tag, a 5 lb. bag of Science Diet cat food, and a knitted kitty blanket.

Opie is a 4 year old female cat whose owners were moving and didn’t make plans to bring her with them! She is a lovely lady who loved to be talked to and petted, and she is litter trained. Opie has gorgeous coloring and beautiful green eyes! She would do best as an only pet, as she doesn’t seem to get along with other cats or dogs. Opie has been in the shelter since March and her adoption fee is just $25! If you have a nice quiet home for this wonderful girl, Opie would be the perfect addition!

She’s so sweet and sad looking! I hope this precious girl is in her forever home very, very quickly. Wouldn’t you love to be the person to replace that sad gaze with sparkly-eyed happiness?

I don’t see Mittens on the Lollypop web site now-could it be? Could it really be?

I see that there are also several senior cats awaiting homes. Poor things, just when life should begin its glide into peace and quietness they’re thrust into a bright noisy temporary place. Culture shock! Not healthy for a cat at any age, let alone a mature cat. Please consider the elder cats, they are desperate to regain some stability. Please.

Special Adoption Fees to Help Hundreds of Cats and Kittens Awaiting New Homes

FAIRPORT, NY − Lollypop Farm, the Humane Society of Greater Rochester, invites the Rochester community to celebrate Adopt-a-Cat Month. Lollypop Farm admits thousands of cats and kittens during the summer months, and it hopes our animal-loving community can help find homes for the wide variety of beautiful cats and kittens up for adoption right now. Throughout the month of June, Lollypop Farm is marking this annual event by reducing cat adoption fees, sending the adopted felines home with free cat goodie bags, offering great raffles and prizes, and hosting a special adoption event.

“Every year the spring and summer months bring a surge of cats and kittens to our shelter,” explains Alice Calabrese Smith, President and CEO. “This month-long event not only helps find homes for the hundreds of cats, but it is also an important opportunity for us to educate our neighbors about the joys of owning cats and the importance of spay and neuter.”

Throughout the month of June the donation for adopting a cat is just $25 (a savings of $50) and $75 for kittens (a savings of $35). The adoption fee includes:

Weekly “Spotlight” cats will focus on a specific group or breed of cats, and adopters of those cats receive an extra starter kit that includes: a kitty collar and engraved ID tag, a 5 lb. bag of Science Diet cat food, and a knitted kitty blanket.

Wanda is a 3-year-old female cat whose owners sadly had to hand her over to Lollypop Farm as they were allergic to her. This great lady is truly beautiful and a friendly cat who is litter-trained. She lived with other cats and so would be a great addition to a home with cats or with another cat from Lollypop Farm! Either way she’ll be a great addition to your home!

Another sadness is that Maxamillion and Nibbles are still waiting for homes. sigh.
